Mobile Setup
Here's how to get Google Apps on your phone.
Note: While setup instructions are provided below, Gmail IMAP access is not officially supported by Google for BlackBerry devices at this time. Simmons Technology recommends and supports iPhone/iPad and Android devices.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings:
Sign in to Gmail.
Click the gear icon
in the upper right, then select Settings.
Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
Select Enable IMAP.
Click Save Changes.
Visit preferences.simmons.edu and change your password. You can choose a new password or re-enter your current password. This is a necessary step before setting up your mobile device.
CONFIGURING YOUR BLACKBERRY (EMAIL ONLY):
On your BlackBerry device, navigate to your home screen.
Select the icon that lets you set up email (this can be called Setup, Setup Wizard, Email Setup, BlackBerry Set-up, E-mail settings, Email Accounts, or Personal Email Set-up).
Follow the setup instructions provided on your device to begin creating a new e-mail account.
Be sure to enter the following:
Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Username: <enter your Simmons username@simmons.edu>
Please note that to configure your email, you will need to use the "username@simmons.edu" version of your email address, and not the firstname.lastname@simmons.edu" version.
Password: <enter your Simmons password>
IMAP Port: 993
Allow the system to add your account, but do not enter your Google Apps password into the utility boxes (this causes the system to default to POP3 instead of IMAP).
Select Next.
Select Next again (bypassing the 'Additional Information Required' section).
Select your account type, then select Next.
You may encounter a "We were unable to configure..." error. Select I will provide the settings to continue.
Select the option that mentions "IMAP/POP".
Select I will provide the settings..., then select Next.
Select Set up existing email account...
Enter your Google Apps account information here, with "imap.gmail.com" as your mail server.
Select Next.
Select Save.
If setup is successful, you should receive a confirmation message and a new mailbox icon should appear on your device's home screen, labeled with your Google Apps email address.
CONFIGURING YOUR BLACKBERRY (CALENDAR):
To access your Simmons Google Calendar on your BlackBerry, you will need to use your phone's mobile browser.
Launch your phone's mobile browser and go to http://google.com/calendar.
On the login screen, enter your Simmons email address and leave the password field blank.
Please note that to sign in here, you will need to use the "username@simmons.edu" version of your email address, and not the firstname.lastname@simmons.edu" version.
Select Sign In (leaving the password field empty).
This login attempt will fail, but will either bring up a Simmons sign-in page, or display a small link below the password field that says About signing in. Clicking this link will bring you to a Simmons sign-in page.
From the Simmons sign-in page, enter your regular Simmons username (without the @simmons.edu on the end) and password.
Select Sign Me In.
Other options for access
Access most Google Apps in your BlackBerry's browser app. Point the browser to mail.google.com/a/simmons.edu, and sign in with your Simmons username and password.
Sync your BlackBerry's mail, contact, and calendar apps with your Google Apps account using your mobile carrier's BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). Follow our instructions, but for more support, please contact BlackBerry.
